Paddle Safari

Tonight, we are staying at a guest lodge on the beach near St Louis in northern Senegal.

We drove a lot today it was a long and hot day. This morning, we did a short boat safari on the Gambia river. We saw a large group of hippos as well as baboons and many kinds of tropical birds. At the end of the safari, the boat ran out of fuel and we had to paddle all the way back to the lodge on the river bank. We were laughing all the way.

Tomorrow, we will visit St Louis, an old colonial city and the first french settlement in West Africa. We will then cross the border into Mauritania, which might take a long time again. Wish us luck.

Senegal seems completely normal in the coutryside, but there are ongoing violent demonstrations and unrest in Dakar relating to the upcoming presidential elections. One thing that seems to be solved for now is the fuel crisis as most gas stations were selling diesel and benzin today.
